At the JCCSF, there’s something for everyone – toddlers, fitness enthusiasts, soon-to-be-mothers, older adults – everyone. The cover of the quarterly Highlights magazine needs to express this, as well as entice people in the neighborhood to crack it open… even if they aren’t Jewish. Bright colors and modern illustrations, bursting with energy, bring to life the atmosphere at the JCCSF. It’s a vibrant place with a diverse community and innovative programming.

JCCSF staff and community members loved the illustrations, which spurred use in other areas – the fall cover elements were printed at large scale and adhered to the front windows. Because the JCCSF usually commissions a freelance illustrator, I was thrilled to be given the opportunity to work on this project, and to have it so well-received.

Fall highlights

Fall is the most important season in the Jewish calendar – it’s all about the high holidays. This illustration nods to Sukkot by incorporating key elements in a way that keeps it inclusive and appealing to everyone. It’s a joyful and cozy scene of making music under the Bay Bridge.

Winter Highlights

Winter at the JCCSF isn’t about one particular holiday, so the focus is on the variety of activities. With a goal of getting an array of audiences to open the mailer, I selectively included something for everyone in the drawing. We’ve got challah, wine, music, painting, yoga, boxing, ballet, and writing, as well as a mix of different ages – mom/son, young girl, and ambiguously aged adults.  A theme of wellness – both mental and physical – ties the illustration together. And a rich, seasonal color palette kept the cover on trend.

Spring Highlights

Similar to winter, the goal with Spring Highlights was to emphasize all of the opportunities at the JCCSF and peak interest in prospective new customers. We’ve got ceramics, soccer, Passover, swimming, Shabbat, gymnastics, and gardening. For consistency, the style stayed the same, but with punchier, more vibrant colors for spring.
